We need to implement a way to drastically relieve Hawaii?s on-going struggle with homelessness, drugs & crime.

For 50 years, since Hawaii became a state in 1959, until now, we are still faced with major challenges concerning homelessness, drugs & crime. This situation directly affects poverty, high school drop out rates, murder, forcible rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, arson, sex abuse, substance abuse, prostitution, aggravated assault, suicide cases, property crimes, gangs, graffiti, foreclosure filings, bankruptcy cases, and mental illness. We need leaders willing to make a positive impact and with the heart to implement change.

Hawaii has an estimated homeless population of 16,000 to 18,000 with around 8,000 on Oahu. This number consists of people who are currently living on beaches, on bus stops, in parks, in cars, in abandoned homes/buildings and under bridges. Each month these numbers rise due to the steadily increasing cost of living in Hawaii (rent/ mortgage, food, gas, medical, employment, etc.). Hawaii's families are directly affected by divorce, crime, and financial challenges.

The divorce rate here in Hawaii is around 52% of which 50% are getting divorced in 5 to 8 years. There are approximately 2,100 to 3,500 people incarcerated in Hawaii and approximately 1,900 men from Hawaii incarcerated in Arizona with around 165 females in Kentucky, not to mention the hundreds that are on probation. Studies show that of 3,500 children from Hawaii whose parents are incarcerated, approximately 90% will end up in prison just like their parents due to drugs and crime. Many of these issues are the leading force behind Hawaii?s increasing homeless population. Currently, Hawaii has 93 active ?Gangs?, totaling 4,000 to 5,000 gang members according to the Honolulu Advertiser.

The cost of homes and rents here in Hawaii continue to escalate each month, so much so, that approximately 56.5% of Hawaii residents own their home compared to the U.S. average home owner at 66.2% according to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau survey. Housing prices have tripled in the last ten years. In 1987, the average home cost approximately $190,200. In 1997, ten years later the average home cost approximately $307,000 (difference of $116,800). Now in 2008, the average home cost approximately $643,500 (difference of $336,500). Rents have increased $500.00 every 10 years. In 1987, the average rent was approximately $1,000 a month. In 1997, the average rent was approximately $1,500 (difference $500.00). Now in 2008, the average rent is approximately $2,000.

Hawaii?s population has the highest percentage of residents over the age of 65, 13.7% compared to the United States average of 12.4% according to the 2005 U.S. Census Bureau survey. In four years, 79 million baby boomers will reach 65 years old and the number of elderly will continue to rise each year. Many will go homeless because they will not be able to afford rent or sustain themselves' due to the increase of the cost of living. A good example is Kukui Gardens and the recent eviction (s) of rentals in Kailua.

We need your help to "Build a Better Hawaii"!

If we don't work together as a TEAM now, what kind of future will Hawaii have in 2016?
